What is SHAHADA?

The first
Pillar of Islam is Shahadah, the declaration with full conviction of
mind and heart that Allah is the one and only diety and that Muhammad (pbuh)
is His servant and messenger. Belief in Allah does not require approval
or acceptance from anyone but Allah. The person who utters this
testimony with sincerety and conviction immediately comes into the fold
of the Muslims and Islam. However, it is quite common for new reverts to
Islam to declare Shahadah in the company of two Muslim witnesses.

There are TWO types of Shahada.
First, shorter one.
اشهد
ان لا إله إلا الله
وأشهد ان محمد رسول الله
ašhadu an lā ilāha
illā-llāh, wa ašhadu anna
muhammadan
rasūlu-llāh
"I testify that
there is no
god (ilah) but
God (Allah),
and I testify that
Muhammad is the messenger of God
(Allah)."
Second, longer than the first one.
أشهد

وحده لا شريك له واشهد أن
محمدا عبده ورسوله
Ash-hadu anla ilaha illal-Lahu
Wahdahu la Sharika Lahu wa-ash-hadu
anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluhu
" I bear witness that there is none worthy of
worship except Allah, the One, without any partner.
And I bear witness that Muhammad
is His servant and His Messenger."

I bear no such witness. Say: He
is only One God. Lo! I am innocent of that which ye associate (with
Him).
